KOI ROYALE / HER MAJESTY (R49,99)

SUN CITY / THE PALACE PONDS

Koi Royale holds court in the palace ponds at Sun City, among fountains, casino lights and a great many photographs of herself. She hosts galas, opens bridges, and has never once been seen without her crown. Lesser fish are expected to curtsy.

She is not royal. She was bought from Koi Kingdom Aquaria in Rustenburg for forty-nine rand ninety-nine, and gave herself the title on the drive home. The crown is the plastic ornament from her tank, and it turns her scales green if she wears it too long. The King has the receipt.

She's entered Snoek'em to get her page back, and with it her dignity, her title and, ideally, her good lighting. A real crown would be nice too.

THE PRIZE The King Prawn keeps a book on every fish on the coast. Every year he hosts Snoek'em and puts Die Boek up as the prize. He has never lost. Every invitation comes with the fighter's own page enclosed, so they know what's at stake.
